A Senior Management Competency Based Development Programme was piloted.
The development programme design included a managing diversity development
centre, workshops, group development programme, projects and mentoring. The
programme was focused on the senior management level to help focus and
promote the organisation’s strategy for an overall culture change. Having
reviewed the pilot project, An Post developed an implementation plan that
describes the changes that now need to be addressed and outlines the specific
measures to be taken to 4mainstream this change initiative throughout the
organisation.
Staff Development for
Flat Organisations – Aughinish Alumina

In this project the company set out to create a model of development
appropriate to slim, flat organisations. As part of the project strategy the
company designed a creativity workshop, a development opportunities workshop
to identify possible development paths inside and outside the organisation
and finally, using IT, designed an intranet tool that contains an
Occupational Skills Profiles developed by the company.
The work of this project
may be useful to other flat organisations with little upward movement
including SME’s in need of expertise for growth and survival.
Developing Employee
Potential – UDV Operations Ireland Ltd.

The overall aim of this project was to give employees the knowledge,
skills and attitude essential for them to thrive and contribute effectively
to the business. To achieve this, they designed a day-release programme
conforming to a nationally accredited standard. They worked closely with Coca
Cola Bottlers and Irish Distillers, and with little modification it will be
useful in many other businesses.
Crafting Change with
New Technology – Waterford Crystal Ltd.

This project combined IT and engineering technology training and
education. The IT software drives the machines and the shop floor control
system produces data on production, quality, losses, breakdowns, downtime,
recurring problems, inventory, led times and ordering fulfilment. The
operators had to become computer literate and to understand the principles of
engineering and how IT and engineering technology integrate. They needed to
participate actively, adapting the machine/technology to deliver a flexible
and fast performance to meet changing customer requirements.

Performance Improvement – Cognis Ireland Ltd.

The project aimed for an accountable, performance driven organisation by
development new approaches to training. The training helped individuals and
teams to identify and to identify and use performance indicators consistent
with the realisation of company goals. The project changed focus since it
began. It ended having the goal of supporting trainees to develop learning
strategies such that individuals can contribute to their own development in
the company and identify their own training needs. Learners thus now lead a
programme that was once lead by trainers.
The results of this
project could be useful to other organisations where the employees need to
develop learning strategies to successfully support change in the workplace.

Supporting Teamwork – SIFA Ltd.

This project developed a new approach to communications, problem solving
and decision making in a self-directed teamwork environment. It achieved this
through the optimal use of ICT for the generation and the exchange of
business and performance related information. Among the aims was the development
of a new competency profile for self-directed team members and a transferable
method for assessing training modules that can use ICT to enhance team as
well as overall business performance. While the products are developed with
reference to SIFA, they are transferable to SMEs regardless of sector,
especially those with shift teams.

Training for Mid-Career Employees – Goldenvale Plc.

The project was originally conceived to help mid career employees at
Golden Vale embrace ICT in the workplace and to take advantage of IT in
making business decisions. This was achieved by developing an innovative and
practical training model that could be used by Golden Vale or other
companies. As the project progressed, however, while the focus on IT skills
remained, it was widened to embrace the complementary and equally important
area of general business skills. Human resources implications of the project
expanded and included the closer integration between the HR and IT
departments. Some staff were selected and trained as facilitators and coaches
to help fellow employees keep up with the ongoing changes envisaged in the company’s
overall strategy.
Getting Started in the
Job Market - Ballymun Job Centre

The project has aimed to address the severe skills mismatch in Ballymun.
There are more than 3,000 unfilled vacancies in this area, yet there are only
about 3,500 job seekers. The twin aim was to work with targeted larger
companies in developing training programmes to re-integrate the long term
unemployed into the workforce. They will help Job Centre registrants who have
finally moved into employment to maintain and progress in their employment by
improving their skills.
Change in the
Construction Industry – Construction Industry Federation

The project was devised to address four separate but interrelated needs.
In the first place, it established standards and procedures for the
registration of contractors in an appropriate system of registration.
Secondly, it assisted construction enterprises to adapt to the accelerating
rate of IT change in business administration. Thirdly, it improved the
business potential and image of construction SMEs. This entailed developing
and testing self-assessment marketing plan and a business manual for
construction firms. And finally, the project identified strategies for
improving environmental standards through effective site waste management.
Promoting Excellence
in SMEs - Excellence Ireland

The project developed training courses, leaning tools and methods to
create a comprehensive programme of business improvement for SMEs. The
Business Improvement Programme is based on the European Model for Business
Excellence and is customised to the particular needs and parameters of SMEs.
The project measured the impact of learning on the participants, on the
management team within the SME, and on the overall performance of the
business. It is targeted particularly at fast-growth organisations in the
service sector.
Flexible Working Arrangements

The project studied existing flexible working arrangements in SMEs and
tried to promote the concept among other Irish SMEs. In addition, it
investigated the potential for and impact of such arrangements in the small
business sector, with the overall aim of encouraging the introduction of
flexible working. Finally, it developed techniques to facilitate the introduction
of flexible working among employees.
Re-training for a
Positive Future – Innill Doiteain Teoranta

This project aimed to teach experienced employees new technological
skills to keep up with the changes in the sector and the industry in general.
This benefits employees at risk because of the decline of the fire-engine
manufacturing. These new skills were not otherwise available in the area.

Systems in an Established SME – Magee Weaving Ltd.

This project maximised the potential offered by IT by selecting employees
to upgrade their skills for the new technology they would be required to use.
Employees participated in redesigning their own work practices with the
introduction of new production procedures. At the same time, Magee
established information exchange networks with customers and a transnational
network for sharing information on technological changes in the industry.
New Training for an
Old Industry M. and A. Moran Ltd.

The project focussed on innovative training and access to and use of IT
with a view to regaining competitive advantage. They developed a training
programme leading to certification that is industry led and previously
unavailable. This raised the skills level of direct and indirect employees,
thus also giving them more flexibility in the marketplace. Their aim was to
transform the company culture and competitiveness through the introduction of
IT to those with little or no previous knowledge.
New Products, New
Future – Wood Industries Ireland Ltd.

The project aim was to adapt their training plans to distance learning
techniques. On-site training was given to help employees acquire the
necessary keyboard and allied skills to access learning institutions in other
member states who provide specially for the wood-processing industry.
Overall, participants gained greatly, acquiring skills that give them much
greater access to further education, more mobility and more long-term
security.
Developing New Skills
in Future SMEs – Greenacre Designs Ltd.

The project sought to establish a centre of excellence leading to a
comprehensive training programme for the furniture industry in frame
manufacture, upholstery skills and related soft furnishing products. The
focus was on innovative design and creativity. The goal was to improve the
existing skills in the company and then to establish a new skills base in the
west Kildare area, thus creating sustainable job opportunities. In the
process they addressed the special needs for flexible employment of women in
the organisation.
Using Television and
Multimedia to Grow Business – AV Edge Ltd.

The project aimed to increase employment opportunities among them and
provide them with easy access to business training. They developed a training
package suitable to their needs and a website to compliment the project. A
series of six television programmes were designed around the training needs
of participating SMEs and the issues/problems giving rise to them.

Resource Management - IBEC

The Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) brought together
solutions from 16 ADAPT projects and promoted them through publications on
paper and on the web. Through their extensive regional and national networks,
the business solutions developed under ADAPT were presented to other
companies facing similar problems throughout the country by way of company visits
and workshops. IBEC is well placed to inform its members and human resource
practitioners generally of the practical solutions developed in ADAPT.
Television Programmes
and Videos: Managing Change in the Workplace – AV Edge Ltd.

The project developed six television programmes in the Bigger, Better,
Faster series that cover the project findings in the following areas: e-commerce,
IT, Lifelong Learning and Training in the Workplace, Transforming Production
Processes and New Organisational Structures in the form of Team-working. The
series aims to take a practical look at change in organisations and answers
questions about why change was necessary, who was involved, how it was
implemented and what happened as a result. The primary focus is on companies
and employees. They also developed videos on similar themes.
Self Development for
Owner-Managers - IBEC

owner-managers of SMEs, the IBEC refined their competency-based development
model into a format that allows broad application to owner-managers of SMEs
