Local Networking

At the start of the project, 20 local networking groups were formed around the country to enable trainers to come together to share information and expertise. There was a high level of commitment to the networking groups when they were set up, and the level of activity reduced over time.

Action Learning was put forward as a process to focus on each individual, and support each member to take action in relation to their own learning. It also introduced a new learning process to many trainers. The project overall has generated quite a level of interest in the Action Learning process.

The experience of local networks highlighted the need for:

  • Greater contracting to build commitment at the start
  • Alternatives to the action learning process
  • Different types of diverse groups
  • Using research as an 'anchor' to provide input into the national policy issues
  • Network Leaders to support groups
  • Mechanisms to ensure the skills and knowledge within the network are accessed

Network Leaders
The role of the Network Leader was identified as key to the overall success of the local network groups, and their ongoing presence is necessary in the structure of the Trainers Network.

Their role has two key aspects:

  • Operational - to facilitate development, discussion, and learning in groups
  • Strategic - to influence network activities and link members to these

Resources were put into the skill development of the Network Leaders, and the role became a development opportunity for trainers. The Network Leaders contributed to the development of a video on Action Learning in order to have such a resource available to introduce the process.
